Tracing, exploring, transforming and archiving - these are terms that could be used to describe Christine Ljubanović's system of coordinates. Art of research, or rather of investigation. What is today an artistic practice was largely uncharted territory when Christine Ljubanović started it in the 1970s and found its first definition in the art historical term "securing evidence". Through her work, Ljubanović has made a major contribution to this art form ever since.
For more than 50 years, Christine Ljubanović has devoted herself very consistently to her artistic archive without being stuck in her visual language. Driven by curiosity, a thirst for knowledge and courage, the artist continues to develop her oeuvre and uses a constantly growing range of different media to do so. She travels the world several times in search of experts in the fields of printing techniques, colour and pigments. She documents her journeys in photographs, archives interviews and research in countless folders and ultimately puts the findings down on paper in hundreds of sheets of paper. This is a gathering of information, just as her photo series conversation portraits is a recording of the immediate encounter between two people, documented forever on black and white contact prints.
