Max Weiler

*1910   +2001

Weiler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Karl Sterrer. At this time he became familiar with Chinese landscape painting of the Song dynasty (960-1279). His interest in Chinese thought and Chinese art can be traced to a shared cosmological world and understanding of nature. Weiler, however, was not interested in the topographical reproduction of landscapes in his painting, he wanted to grasp the spiritual within nature and express it in images. With nature as a starting point, and in close relationship with nature, he developed a gestural but also sometimes meditative abstract style of painting. (G. Oberhollenzer)
